The Beauty of Tessellations: Between Art and Mathematics

After an introduction by the Art and Mathematics teachers on the concept of tessellations, an experimental study will be conducted with one class of students from each school to explore which types of tessellations are perceived as more beautiful—simple or complex. Two tessellations by mathematicians, two by an artist, and two created by the students from both classes will be selected. The students will formulate a hypothesis regarding whether simplicity or complexity leads to greater beauty. A survey will involve all students, teachers, and parents from both schools, who will vote on the aesthetic appeal of the different tessellations. The results will either confirm or challenge the students’ hypotheses. Following this, two students from each class will collaboratively write a scientific article on their experience, which will be published in SMartS, a journal founded by the Art teacher and students of Poli School. Both teachers and students will gain firsthand experience in an experimental approach to the study of art.
