Integrating Migrants and Refugees at School

How can integration of young migrants and refugees be achieved at school? Which educational concepts and teaching materials have proved to be successful and could serve other schools as an example? This group is primarily intended to be a place of mutual assistance in which school leaders and teachers can share experiences and materials. The group extends its focus to also strengthen teachers supporting refugees and is being re-launched under the name “Integrating migrants and refugees at school”. It will propose and share educational resources and activities for teacher hosting refugees.

New guidelines published.

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has just published the first ever Guidelines for Libraries Supporting Displaced Persons: Refugees, Migrants, Immigrants, Asylum Seekers.

 

In this time of the largest global refugee crisis since the second world war-refugee numbers have doubled since 2016 based on the Global Refugee Forum 2023the threat of starvation facing 343 million people in 74 countries in the world, numerous active armed conflicts, poverty, climate crisis – libraries have become more than ever a shelter for the body, mind and soul when people are making difficult decisions, chosen or forced, in order to survive. Displaced persons are scattered all over the world looking for the safest place for them and their families to settle and when they move to a new country are faced with legal, cultural, educational, and economic challenges, while in need of information, guidance and support. Libraries play a key role in making these new community members feel welcome and succeed in their efforts to develop themselves, heal their traumas and move on. Guidelines for Displaced persons are more than ever needed as a go-to document for covering definitions, human rights, policies, library services and programs, ideas for staff training, ideas on building partnerships, needs assessments, evaluations of services, suggested solutions to common challenges and to hear stories on how libraries provide services to displaced persons around the world.

This upcoming webinar, presented by Dr. Nansia Kyriakou, Coordinator of the RE.MA.C. Project, offers an in-depth overview of this innovative initiative aimed at fostering intercultural understanding and language learning in classrooms with diverse student populations. RE.MA.C. brings together native language students, migrant learners, and mainstream teachers to collaborate on shared language and intercultural tasks using technology and a blended learning model.

 

Participants will learn about the Erasmus+ project's goals, structure, and outcomes, including the development of teaching and learning materials inspired by thematic topics from national textbooks. These materials aim to create inclusive classrooms where diversity is celebrated and all students have equitable learning opportunities. The webinar will highlight how RE.MA.C. addresses the challenges mainstream teachers face when working with linguistically and culturally diverse students.

 

Dr. Kyriakou, a leading expert in multilingualism and multicultural education, will share insights from her extensive academic and professional experience. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how the project’s innovative methodologies support fair and inclusive education while promoting respect and acceptance in diverse school settings.

SEEVAL: building inclusive schools and ownership of values

Social-emotional education (SEE) is vital for creating inclusive and supportive learning spaces, especially for migrants and refugees.

The SEEVAL project equips educators with tools and activities that promote empathy, resilience, and emotional intelligence. With the integraton of SEE, teachers can better support students from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.
