Happy World DNA Day!

Established in 2003, World DNA Day raises awareness and celebrates DNA’s importance to the world. 2025 also marks the 22nd anniversary of the Human Genome Project’s completion and the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix.

Understanding our DNA can help us make better decisions about our health. DNA testing and genetic counselling can help identify genetic predispositions to certain diseases, which can help individuals take proactive measures to prevent or manage these conditions. For example, if someone is found to have a genetic predisposition to heart disease, they may be advised to make lifestyle changes such as exercising more and eating a heart-healthy diet to reduce their risk.

Advances in DNA research have led to the development of personalized medicine. This means that medical treatments can be tailored to an individual's specific genetic makeup, which can result in more effective and safer treatments. Personalized medicine is particularly promising in the field of cancer treatment, where genetic testing can help identify specific mutations that are driving the cancer, leading to more targeted therapies and better outcomes for patients.

Overall, World DNA Day serves as a reminder of the important role that DNA plays in our health and well-being. By understanding our DNA, we can make informed decisions about our health and take proactive measures to prevent or manage disease.

Happy World DNA Day!

Bullying Prevention: Reflect, Share, Act!

COFACE – FAMILIES EUROPE is a European School Education Platform supportive partner. It is a network promoting the wellbeing, health and security of families and their members in a changing society, and serves as a trusted entity for family mainstreaming and for the voice and needs of families in the EU and beyond. COFACE Families Europe is rooted in six core values: non-discrimination; equal opportunities; respect of human rights; empowerment; social inclusion; solidarity. Its e-learning course entitled “School Bullying Management – Effective Skills for Educators” leads educators to discovering useful insights into the causes, expressions, and effects of bullying, as well as clear guidelines on how to prevent and tackle bullying in school communities.

Register for the course (see instructions here) and take part in an asynchronous online group activity!

Steps:

Educators read bullying-related scenarios reflecting different forms of bullying (verbal, physical, online, exclusion, teacher-student dynamics). The scenarios are in this Padlet.

You are kindly invited to select a few scenarios and reflect on:

- type of bullying involved;

- causes and effects;

- how it aligns with what has been learned in the course.

Then, develop a practical intervention/prevention strategy (immediate/long-term response, involvement of stakeholders - students, teachers, parents – etc.).

Next, comment constructively on at least one plan using these guided questions: What works well? What could be improved? Any other suggestions?

Finally,  post a short written or audio reflection on the scenario(s) chosen at the beginning using these guided questions: What did you learn from the scenario and from what other peers have written? What can you apply in your school context? What further support might you need?

Thank you for being part of this!

WE’RE SO GLAD TO HAVE YOU ON BOARD! LET’S LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER!

Europeana eTwinning Contest!

Dear friends, if you are interested in exploring ways to bridge the gap between formal and non-formal education using digital cultural heritage and innovative pedagogies while supporting the health and wellbeing of students and teachers, you are kindly invited to participate in a fascinating contest about the wonderful wellbeing resources that are stored on the Europeana blog – a site full of valuable information, suitable educational content and superb materials for the educational community. All you have to do is go to https://school-education.ec.europa.eu/en/etwinning/group/health-and-wellbeing-education/pages/europeana-learning-scenarios, read through the 17 learning scenarios there (they are all based on Europeana resources), reflect on what the author of the blog post has shared and write a comment here: https://school-education.ec.europa.eu/en/etwinning/group/health-and-wellbeing-education/forums/discussion/34163/europeana-learning-scenarios, of at least 60 words, acknowledging their effort. Of course, creativity will be appreciated – an original response, an interesting perspective, a funny piece of knowledge brought in can go a long way and can even make waves! On eTwinning Day – May 9th – a book in the Penguin Little Black Classics series will be won by one lucky participant - who has written the winning comment! Looking forward to reading your comments on the site! More comments (on different learning scenarios), more chances to win!

International Day of Happiness is in March!

Dear friends,

On the 20th of March we celebrate the International Day of Happiness! Let us truly get inspired and make it – this year – a day to remember! Read about it here and share with us your merry enjoyments of the day with your students. Wellbeing at its best!

But how about inspiring happiness in our students on a daily basis? Could this pe possible? Read about positive education and answer - as honestly as you can - this question: Do YOU currently teach happiness skills? How?

For those who have just joined the group: welcome! Please go to the Members’ Lounge and reply to the Introductions thread, then take part in the ice-breaking activity entitled "Have you ever...?", which will allow us to find out more (personal and professional) things about each other. Also, please let everybody know what your expectations are and what you specifically can do for the group by answering a very short survey, which is in the Members’ Lounge as well. You can always read the Group Guidelines in the Members’ Lounge, and perhaps upload your photo on the European School Education Platform (ESEP) if you haven't done so yet (plus possibly write a few words about yourself).

Let’s make the whole month of March a truly joyful month, in the spirit of its 20th day!

Daniela.
