UniClub: young refugees’ path to university studies

UniClub is a learning support programme for young people aged 13 to 20 with refugee and migration backgrounds who would like to study at university in the future.

UniClub is a project of Vienna University Children’s Office and provides learning support and educational counselling. It supports students who are attending schools that offer a high school diploma and whose first language is not German. UniClub strives to work towards educational justice and equity.

The learning support is mainly based on a buddy system. The majority of StudyBuddies are pre-service teachers in courses at the Centre for Teacher Education at Vienna University who support young people in learning or doing homework. Participants meet their StudyBuddy once a week for a learning session.

UniClub also offers a number of other opportunities.

  • LernClub is where participants can study for school, do their homework and practice German. It provides books and learning materials, computers, printers and internet access.
  • IntensivClubs, such as the Math Club, German Club and English Club, help participants improve in their majors and languages. Participants meet every week in small study groups.
  • Workshops and excursions are available for all who are interested in science,  and offers hands-on experience and on-site visits.
