Bilingual Supportive Material for Migrant Children in Europe (AVIOR)

The Erasmus+ funded AVIOR project aimed to improve the basic numeracy and literacy skills of migrant children and reduce the achievement gap between native and non-native pupils, by using bilingual materials, improving teacher professional competence and enhancing migrant parental involvement. AVIOR ran from December 2016 until August 2019.

The AVIOR project took a three-pronged approach:

  1. Bilingual resources: translating and adapting materials of high quality
  2. Building teacher competence in creating inclusive multilingual classrooms
  3. Creating teacher-parent collaborative networks

48 kindergarten and primary teachers in ten European cities, towns and villages promoted parent participation in the classroom by having parents read stories in their home languages to the class, while the teacher would repeat the story in the school language and/or teachers discussed with parents which materials would be taken home to practise with their children.

Outcomes:

  • Bilingual materials in many languages
  • Study visit reports and videos in four countries
  • Case studies and synthesis reports on parental involvement
  • User guide to the translation process of multilingual teaching materials
  • Implementation Studies for teachers
  • A handbook with a practical comprehensive overview from all outcomes and guides
