What works: evidence for quality teaching practice

A new OECD report explores the day-to-day realities of teaching, aiming to understand and refine high-quality practices to improve student achievement.

Drawing on qualitative insights from over 150 schools across 40 countries, the report examines five goals of high-quality teaching (see below) and 20 practices that teachers use to achieve them.

  1. Ensuring cognitive engagement
  2. Crafting quality subject content
  3. Providing social-emotional support
  4. Fostering classroom interaction
  5. Using formative assessment and feedback

The report considers not just what these practices are, but how they work in different contexts, and encourages a shift towards more evidence-informed teaching.

It ends with a reminder that the quality of teaching lies not only with the teacher: factors such as class size, curriculum design and the broader school environment also play critical roles. School leaders play the crucial role of creating environments that enable teachers to thrive and deliver high-quality teaching.
