Safer Internet Day (SID) – organised by the Insafe/INHOPE network of European Safer Internet Centres with European Commission support* – is a global observance that fosters a better internet for all. Celebrated in over 180 countries and territories, SID has evolved over two decades, engaging children, young people, parents, teachers, industry and policymakers.

The mission of SID is very dear to eTwinning. Fighting and preventing online risks, such as hate speech, cyberbullying, online fraud and gender-based violence online deeply resonates with eTwinning values, particularly as we delve into this year’s annual theme: Well-being at school. Considering that children and young people spend most of their time at school, the role of these institutions becomes critical in safeguarding pupils’ well-being, notably in the digital sphere.

That’s why eTwinning is dedicated to promoting internet safety and digital awareness through various initiatives like dedicated groups, webinars and annual campaigns. In 2023, with a focus on the annual theme of Innovation and Education, eTwinners already actively participated in online sessions addressing digital safety and a responsible use of technology. Additionally, the featured group eSafety remains a stable platform for ongoing reflection on these critical issues.

On Tuesday 6 February 2024, Safer Internet Day 2024 will discuss the European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+) which aims to protect, respect and empower children online in the Digital Decade, as well as the Digital Services Act (DSA), a new set of European rules to make sure  that online platforms and services protect the rights of all users, limit risks, and stop the spread of harmful or illegal content.

*Safer Internet Day would not be possible without the support of the European Commission with funding provided by the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL). Find out more about the EC’s new European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+) on the European Commission’s website.
