Science, technology, engineering, art & maths: Da Vinci as metaphor of STEAM (Livorno, Pisa, Florence - Italy)
The term STEM was first coined by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the United States in the mid-nineties. STEM was the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Shortly after, at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, art education joined these four subjects to give birth to what we know today as STEAM.
Description
In education, the use of new methodologies allows the incorporation of curricular knowledge of subjects such as art, physics, mathematics, technology etc and, at the same time, work on specific competences, attitudes and behaviours such as teamwork, digital competence, initiative or decision making, all linked by technology.
In this course, we focus on the study of one of the most famous and recognized artists and scientists in the history, Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci is recognized as one of the greatest inventors of history who tried to find practical solutions for real problems. He designed machines that were ahead of his time, such as flying machines. He was a prodigious painter, creator of some of the best paintings ever, a scientist, and an engineer. He studied the human body, animals, and plants and designed bridges and other structures. Leonardo represents a role model in STEAM, six hundred years before considering this as educational methodology.
The course will take place in Livorno, but it will include visits to other cities such as Florence. In Florence we will visit the most fabulous museum dedicated to Leonardo, where we will be able to admire and to use the models created from his projects compiled in his writings.
Trainers will be in contact with the participants in order to solve any questions or doubts and provide advice on accommodation, airports, airlines etc. They will also familiarize participants with the website of the seminars (https://www.learntoteacheu.org/ ) which will be used to upload pedagogical material created during the course duration.
- Course fee: 490 euros per person. It includes the course fee, entry tickets where needed, and transportation within the working days of the course. Airport transport and accommodation are not included. Please, take into consideration that sending institutions should have an insurance coverage for their participants as stated in the Erasmus+ Quality Standards for Mobilities.
Learning objectives
Leonardo is a metaphor for what STEAM methodology intends, that is, to develop the curricular matters of the scientific-mathematical field, using art for innovation and creativity.
Like the rest of the LearntoTeach courses, this is a course that combines theoretical training with practice. Participants will be able to handle, in situ, practical examples of STEAM, and to obtain numerous documents, both theoretical and practical, that will allow them to better understand STEAM methodology and share the experience.
The visits, workshops, conferences and interactive works in this course are organised with the aim of always keeping in mind how to apply all this in our teaching activities in the classroom, focusing on the 4C’s of 21st century skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity) as an essential addition. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences in this field thus, we will all be able to expand our knowledge in STEAM methodology.
Furthermore, we aim to facilitate our participants in their quest for networking and collaborating with other participants and institutions. Following the original objectives of Erasmus+, we take very seriously the exchange of ideas, experiences and methodologies. Thus, our day to day programme, includes theory, discussion, cultural activities and practice.
Methodology & assessment
Participants are asked to create a simple activity (teaching or other) and upload in on our working platform. In this way, produced material can be shared among the group and thus, enrich their pedagogical activities obtained.
To ensure optimum enjoyment of the course, we communicate the next day's briefing and we create a group communication tool in order to avoid changes or unexpected situations. Our goal is to enhance the exprerience and to construct relationships among the participants and our trainers that can lead to future partnerships and collaborations.
Certification details
We take our participants' personal development seriously and consequently, we offer a Certificate of Attendance that is in line with the specifications of Erasmus Quality Standards for Mobilities. The Certificate states the number of hours of the course (30), the place and date of the course and the participant's name. Our participants usually need to produce a simple activity/product which will be uploaded in our working platform. Upon the completion of this task, the participants can receive the certificate.
We also certify and sign the Mobility Agreement, Quality Commitment and Europass Mobility or any other document our participants wish to obtain in order to comply with Erasmus+ and/or their personal development.
