Lesson Plan: Natural Disasters for 4th Grade Students

 

Teacher: Ayşegül Aydın

 

Objectives:

  • Students will learn about natural disasters and their causes.
  • Students will learn how to prepare for natural disasters.
  • Students will understand the importance of emergency plans.

Materials:

  • Pictures of natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wildfires)
  • Videos or simulations of natural disasters
  • Handouts on emergency preparedness
  • Whiteboard or blackboard
  • Markers or chalk

 

Introduction (10 minutes):

 

  • Show pictures of different natural disasters and ask students if they know what they are.
  • Discuss what natural disasters are and ask students to share their experiences with them.
  • Ask students what they know about preparing for natural disasters.

 

Body (40 minutes):

 

  • Introduce different types of natural disasters and their causes (e.g., hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires).
  • Discuss the potential impact of each type of disaster on communities and the environment.
  • Show videos or simulations of each type of disaster, discussing safety precautions and evacuation procedures.
  • Provide handouts on emergency preparedness and have students discuss what they would do in the event of a natural disaster (e.g., create an emergency plan, identify a safe place to take shelter, gather necessary supplies).
  • Discuss the importance of having an emergency plan and practicing it with family members.

 

Conclusion (10 minutes):

  • Recap what was covered in the lesson and ask students to share what they learned.
  • Encourage students to talk with their families about emergency preparedness and to create an emergency plan together.
  • Provide resources for students to learn more about natural disasters and emergency preparedness.

1 stage: A phase brainstormig-10 min. Activating prior knowledge.

Asking questions.

2 stage: B phase work on the text - 20 min.

For the presentation of  natural disasters, the class is divided into groups and they answer the questions-what should we do to avoid disasters?

Presentation:

The groups present the presentations of the completed work. Presentations are being summarized.

3rd stage: C phase reflection-10 min.

Students fill in the cause and effect diagram of natural disasters.

 Summarizing the scheme.

Assessment: Self assessment, peer assessment
