
Education for Sustainable Development
This course is for teachers who want to gain a better understanding of sustainability and how to better integrate student thinking about sustainability and the environment into their teaching.
Description
This course is aimed at teachers of all subjects, who want to gain a better understanding of sustainability and how to better integrate student thinking about sustainability and the environment into their teaching. The course also looks to explore Irish culture from a sustainability perspective, via safe discussion during lessons, as well as activities and excursions outside the classroom.
There is a space for participants to voice their own ideas and exchange practices with classmates, who come from a range of countries and educational backgrounds. Participants must have at least an upper-intermediate (B2) level of English. The lessons take place in mixed nationality groups at our school in Dublin, with no more than 15 students per class and courses last for either 1 or 2 weeks. Various accommodation options are available on request for participants throughout their stay.

The last day of the course involves giving mini-presentations on the topics mentioned during the week, plus exploring sustainability courses and making future plans for becoming a more sustainable teacher.
Learning objectives
- to develop awareness of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
- to design and deliver better active learning experiences in the area of sustainability and the environment through a critical engagement with new ideas and recent pedagogical and technological developments in English language teaching.
- to develop your own English language skills and gain awareness of Irish history, literature, culture and society through topical and interactive lessons, activities and excursions.
- to establish contacts with teachers from a variety of education systems to facilitate future networking.
Methodology & assessment
- Participants are expected to actively participate in the lessons, reflecting on their own beliefs and practice, and sharing thoughts, ideas and expertise in pair work, small groups and with the class as a whole. Critical thinking and active peer and self-evaluation are essential for the course.
- During the course participants will also take part in a range of afternoon activities where they will be encouraged to develop their language skills in a more informal environment outside the classroom and further enhance their knowledge of contemporary Ireland.
- Assessment is based around continuous evaluation of learner progress.
Materials, digital tools & other learning resources
Participants are provided with all materials in digital format via Google Classroom, which they will be able to access after completing the course.
They will also be provided with paper handouts and textbooks as necessary.
Certification details
The certificate includes the name of the course, duration and dates of the course, and course content.

Cancellation & changes:
If a participant cancels their course more than 30 days before the course commences, all fees will be refunded.
A participant may change the course or date of the course up to 30 days before the courses commences, and in exceptional courses at shorter notice if other courses and course dates are available.
Refunds, partial refunds or compensation of any kind will not be given for days missed during the course, for late arrival or early departure, days missed due to adverse weather conditions, acts of governments, interruption of electrical power, fire, floods, war, other natural disasters, disease outbreaks or other cases of force majeure.
