Description

One of the main themes in the chain programme is cultural interaction between Europe and other parts of the world. (European) culture can only be defined as the outcome of various influences, within Europe itself and between Europe and its neighbour countries/continents. Therefore various travelling courses are being held to study this cultural interaction. The Sevilla course fits into this theme: Las Otras Orillas. How is Europe being influenced by and how does Europe influence the 'other shores': Mediterranean and Atlantic? Sevilla is a central and symbolic location to concentrate on this issue.
Seas, like rivers, can be bastions or bridges. Is there a cultural entity north and south of Gibraltar strait? To embody the the course theme, part of the course will take place in Northern Africa in the perspective of cultural interaction with the south of Spain: Europe and la otra orilla or Europe as la otra orilla.

Learning objectives

In Chain courses the central concept regarding content is cultural heritage as an integrating element. All aspects of human existence - determinant factors for this existence as well as the outcomes of human endeavour and creativity - can be connected to this central concept. Landscape (natural as well as human-arranged), built environment, literature, food, religious ideas, music, mathematics and many more aspects fit into this definition. Therefore cultural heritage is also a perfect vehicle to connect and integrate the various school subjects.

A key element in each Chain course is joint production. As the mikro-equivalent of mankind creating culture, each course group is invited to express the course content in various forms of artistic expression: drama, visual arts, music, poetry, film and photography etcetera. This is not something 'afterwards', but a basic incentive to learn: never a topic will come as near to you as when you, e.g., have to perform this in a drama production for a group. (more in article).

Methodology & assessment

The key methodology is to 'embody' the course theme during on-site visits and expressing this 'story line' in various forms of 'artistic production' (drama, visual arts, poetry etc.). Advance 'preparation' training is required via articles in an on-line magazine.

Certification details

At the end of the course the participants receive a certificate with an evaluation of their contributions to the programme. They also anonymously fill in an on-line evaluation form.
