Inclusion: Exploring Identities in a Multicultural Education System (Larnaka - Cyprus)
Borders, conquerors, risky economies, wars around the world have always been elements of change. Areas of the world and especially of Europe, have changed creating a flow of borders and of course, of people. These changes affected the way that societies have developed, the way that people still think and the way that countries have evolved.
Description
People who have experienced any kind of shift in their status in recent years are part of our world, and we must learn to manage the challenges of change. An important aspect of understanding the identities of those who relocate to new countries is recognizing the cultural differences between them and the host community. To work effectively with individuals in these contexts—such as in classrooms—it is crucial to first understand their identities and experiences.
Identity is complex and multi-dimensional, encompassing cultural, ethnic, religious, linguistic, and national aspects. These intertwined dimensions shape an individual’s sense of self. A loss of connection to one's identity can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and lack of belonging. For those adapting to new environments, preserving their identity is both a challenge and a necessity. In this course, we will acknowledge the importance of identity and try to provide support for cultural and social identities to thrive.
Learning objectives
This course aims to help educators experience real-life situations and stories in the only divided capital in the world, Nicosia-Cyprus. With the special situation that the island lives under, actual locations become places of interest and personal stories become OUR stories. Learning by experiencing becomes a valuable tool for educators who wish to sensitize their students in accepting various kinds of identities into their schools. Poems, ideas, educational material, research results, personal stories, onsite locations and many more will provide a kaleidoscope of activities aiming to provide educators with varied material that can be used in any level of education.
We also aim to facilitate our participants in their quest for networking and collaborating with other institutions. Following the objectives of Erasmus+, we take seriously the exchange of ideas, experiences and methodologies. Thus, our day to day programme includes theory, discussion, onsite activities and practice.
