Irish History and Culture (Course only)
Embark on a transformative journey with SEDA College Dublin in 2024, where we
specialise in teacher training and professional development.
Our meticulously designed programme aims to equip educators with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the evolving landscape of 21st-century teaching.
Description
At SEDA College, we align our curriculum to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages with the Council of Europe. The four key objectives within the SEDA Curriculum are:
- Communicative Activities
- Language Lexical Understanding
- Linguistic Development
- Social-Cultural Understanding
The academic team at SEDA recognises that students cannot acquire everything they need to learn at once, nor can they learn effectively from a random collection of exercises and assignments. At SEDA, the design of all our courses starts with the same question; ‘Why are these students learning English?’ It is a question that helps focus the curriculum and syllabus design team, ensuring that the designed courses are relevant for learners by considering the world outside the language classroom. The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach at SEDA College does precisely that. Dive deep into the richness of Irish culture while enhancing your English proficiency—a holistic educational adventure. Embark on a transformative journey with SEDA College in Dublin and embrace every facet of the Irish experience. Your voyage with us extends beyond the classroom, immersing you in Dublin's rhythm and vibrancy.
Learning objectives
Gain insights into Irish history and culture by studying five national treasures while engaging on your treasure hunt. The treasures include the Bog bodies of Gallagh Man and Clonycavan Man (dated between 200 and 400 BC); the Book of Kells (dated between late 6th and the early 9th centuries); Casino in Marino (finished around 1775); Frances Bacon’s studio ((1909-1992), reconstructed piece by piece in the Hugh Lane Gallery) and Eileen Gray’s Non-conformist Chair (Ireland's pioneer of 20th Century design and architecture).
- Develop and integrate attractive content into effective teaching;
- Learn how to find resources and materials to incorporate new content and language in the classrooms;
- Understand CLIL principles and its practical applications;
- Develop teachers’ academic and language knowledge of planning, preparing and implementing reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities for non-native speakers of a language;
- Refresh and broad communicative skills in the English language;
- Implemented CLIL methodology successfully in classes.
Methodology & assessment
It is regarded by EU institutions as an essential instrument to foster European citizens’ bi- and multilingualism, to be offered alongside regular foreign language teaching for students in mainstream education.
CLIL often involves a content-teacher teaching content through a second or foreign language but may also involve content from subjects being used in language classes.
It is widely recognised that there are challenges to overcome to achieve successful teaching and learning through this approach. To truly realize the added value of CLIL, teachers need to embrace a new paradigm of teaching and learning, and they need tools and templates that help them plan their lessons and create/adapt their materials. The role of the teacher in the teaching and learning process needs to be re-evaluated.
An appropriate balance of teacher-directed and learner-directed activities is needed for successful learning, thus enabling teachers to provide the necessary modelling, scaffolding and motivation.
