Social and emotional learning for mental health in schools
This course will concentrate on the strategic importance of school staff in enhancing student mental health through a holistic approach, where prioritizing the well-being of all school members is central to the school's mission.

Description
This course will explore the various protective and risk factors affecting the psychological well-being of both students and staff. Protective factors, such as positive teacher-student relationships and a strong sense of school community, will be highlighted. On the other hand, at-risk factors including bullying, cyberbullying, work-related stress, and burnout will also be addressed. The course will also explore mental health promotion, through the lens of developmental and educational psychology research, focusing on the short- and long-term psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being of both students and teachers. Furthermore, the course will introduce the theoretical framework of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and offer a variety of practical activities that can be implemented in diverse educational settings for students of different ages and developmental stages.
Learning objectives
- Develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills to support mental health in school settings, considering various protective and risk factors affecting the psychological well-being of both students and staff.
- Explore the importance of mental health promotion, by discussing short and long-term psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being of both teachers and students
- Discover the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Framework through practical exploration and design of relevant activities suitable for diverse educational settings.
Methodology & assessment
The course is offered as an asynchronous course with flexibility in regard to when and where participants follow the course content and join the course activities. However, there is a final deadline in place for the submission of a course product. Participants are required to actively contribute to the course activities by sharing their work and submitting a course product. This product is submitted and assessed by peers or the course instructor in the final module of the course.
Certification details
Upon successful completion of the course, a digital course certificate is awarded. The certificate shows the name of the learner and key course details such as the estimated learning hours, the learning objectives, and a link to the course homepage.
