OCTOBER ACTIVITIES
Each school conducts a field survey to explore and better understand their neighborhood through the practice of Slow Looking.
Slow Looking is an effective teaching and learning strategy that actively engages students in the observation process, fostering deeper awareness and reflection.
According to Project Zero’s Out of Eden Learn project, the steps of the Slow Looking routine are as follows:
Select your subject for slow looking: Choose a physical feature of your environment, a person or group of people, or an interaction or event as your observation subject.
Observe your subject for at least 5 minutes.
Record your “wonders” by listing questions that arise during your observation.
Consider your subject within a larger system.
Visualize the system by sketching a diagram that represents the relationships and context.
Reflect individually or as a group on any new insights gained from this activity.
After completing the research, the schools were divided into four groups.
Once the schools had practiced the Slow Looking routine in their own neighborhoods, they paired up and met online to exchange their findings!
