A short summary/description of your project

Students from all over the world calculate the circumference of the Earth by reproducing the ancient historical experiment of Eratosthenes, using 21st century ICT tools.

Collaboration between partner schools

Collaboration activities go beyond communication. Please describe the work process of the project clearly outlining the division of tasks between you and your partner(s). In particular, describe:

a) The aspects of the project where you and your partner(s) collaborated.

b) The activities in which pupils worked together.

c) How the final products of the project were achieved by the pupils.

Students and teachers (from 21 eTwinning schools and 18 schools from America and Asia) collaborate to achieve the aim of the project, according to an estimated schedule.

The students introduce themselves and their schools in the Twinspace and become familiar with the process of a collaborative measure.

Measurements are coordinated any day and admin-students can post their data in the journal; 12 monthly newsletters summarise these results.

Each of the 8 astronomical events of this year is the subject of a publication in Twinspace, same for online events ( World space week, 100h of astronomy, Bibliotheca Alexandrina) which are also shared on the dedicated websites.

Teachers are effectively using social media for instant communication.

Use of technology

Please describe:

a) How technology has been used by all partners to enrich the activities of the project.

b) How you addressed data-protection and copyright issues.

Students have tutorials at their disposal to draw the geometric figure with Geogebra and make an animated gif to show the parallelism of the solar rays.

Twinspace tutorials for teachers and admin students are also available.

The students agree on the code of conduct and collaborate to the production of posters for the Safer Internet Day.

The published documents respect copyrights and are in accordance with parental consent.

With the Eratosthenes code activity, the students participate in the code week.

The use of videoconferencing tools allowed students (4 times) and teachers (1 time) to communicate.

Pedagogical approaches

Please describe the following:

a) The educational objectives and pedagogical approaches you have used with your pupils during the project work. (Examples; small group work, independent research by pupils, etc.

b) If your pupils are very young, the methods you used to engage them.

A teacher guide for new partners in this recurring project since 2005 is translated into 10 languages.

A pedagogical module in 5 sequences addresses  the different scientific notions on light, shadows and the movements of the Earth and the Sun on which Eratosthenes' experiment is based.

Six experimental activities to set the experimental device,  improve the accuracy of the measure  and understand the geometric calculation promote student autonomy and decision-making.

Curricular integration

Please describe the following:

a) How you tried to integrate the project into your existing curriculum/subject matter/s and/or if you followed a multidisciplinary approach.

b) What key competencies and skills you developed in your pupils during the project work.

The aim of the project mainly implements  knowledge, skills and attitudes related to  competence in mathematics, science, and  technology.

Results and documentation

Please describe the impact that this project had on your pupils and on your work as a teacher. In particular:

a) How you achieved the set of objectives of your project.

b) How you evaluated your project.

c) How you disseminated the project and the project outcomes.

A pre-test assesses basic notions in geography, geometry and astronomy.

The students from Greece and Romania answered the mid-term evaluation form.

Mid-term statistics give the percentages of completion of the different activities.

The quality of the measures were evaluated on both equinoxes in March and September.

Students and teachers evaluate their progress and aims in the 21st century skills framework.

The scientific goal of calculating the circumference of the Earth is achieved with a relative error of 0.37%.
