Children’s rights, UP!: strategies to prevent child sexual abuse

The Children’s rights, UP! Project aims to prevent child sexual abuse (CSA) by promoting key competences and healthy behaviours in young children from all cultures.

This Erasmus+ project has been shaped by five organisations, which have created an array of resources to prevent CSA available in English, Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Finnish, and Serbian.

Resources for preschool teachers

The didactic guide for preschool teachers, presented by the Vicki Bernadet Foundation, offers resources and tools for professionals to prevent CSA through different strategies: teaching children their rights, including sex education in the classroom, talking about CSA, and creating a protective environment in which children can speak openly.

Moreover, preschool teachers also have access to a free online course, created by the European Federation of Sexology. The course has six modules focusing on the prevention of sexual abuse and early recognition of traumatic events in children.

Resources for families

The prevention kit for families was designed by the European Parents’ Association to help families understand their child’s sexual development, and to support them in affective and sex education. The kit also provides families with the skills, knowledge, and tools to prevent sexual abuse from an early age.

In addition, there are two stories with a health promotion perspective to help parents educate their children about CSA and show them how to identify and talk about issues, if they arise. The stories are meant for 4-5-year-old children and were created by the Council for Creative Education with the help of children.

Lastly, the stories, posters, and images that Naono used to represent ideas graphically can be used by both teachers and parents to explain relevant concepts surrounding CSA to children.
