Picturebook-based English Language Teaching: Exploring Social Issues (Citizenship-SDGs)
This professional development course is based on the picturebook-based teaching resource and pedagogical framework developed by Gail Ellis and Tatia Gruenbaum for the British Council Teaching English (link). The picturebooks chosen for this lesson series address social issues such as experiencing homelessness, relying on foodbanks and turning to crime and bullying to survive or save face.

Description
Picturebooks allow pupils to explore a social issue from a distance, first by raising awareness, then by developing understanding and then by moving towards informed involvement. Despite the seriousness of the topic, the selected picturebooks include a strong verbal or visual message of hope and illustrate the importance of individuals and the community showing kindness and taking action. The picturebooks discuss socio-economic disparity with a sense of respect and empathy and thus offer a suitable stepping stone to raise awareness amongst learners and to develop an emotional connection to the issues addressed in the picturebooks.
This 5-day course (30h) has been divided into two parts:
Day 1-3:
- Lead by Gail Ellis and Tatia Gruenbaum, participants will explore picturebooks which address the theme of hardship and resilience.
- Participants will discover and discuss the picturebook-selection process, the development process of the British Council lesson series and the 3P pedagogical framework.
- Lead by specialised trainers, these two days are dedicated to hands-on application. Participants will select a picturebook which aligns with the theme and develop their own lesson plan.
- Participants will prepare and present a picturebook-based PELT lesson plan based on the examples given in British Council resource ‘Exploring Social Issues’ by Gail Ellis and Tatia Gruenbaum.
Learning objectives
The objectives are for participants to:
- Discover picturebooks that address the theme of hardship and resilience
- Discover the 3P model for picturebook-based primary ELT.
- Understand the 5 key steps which underpin the individual lesson plans for the series of exploring social issues.
- Participate by responding to questions with personal interpretations and opinions.
- Understand how metacognitive dimensions can be added in order to make learning visible.
- Understand how reflection activities can inspire pupils to transfer newly acquired awareness and knowledge from inside the classroom to informed involvement with the world outside the classroom.
- Adopt and encourage use of bias-free language.
- Identify cross-curriciular links to Maths, Economics, Social studies, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education.
- Identify links to SDGs, UNCRC and world (UN) celebration days.
Methodology & assessment
The lessons are informed by a story-based methodology and are embedded in a children’s rights perspective (Ellis, 2019; 2021) and comprise three categories: protection, provision and participation. This ‘3P’-framework enables teachers to create a relationship of shared control with their pupils and allows pupils to exercise their agency and participate fully in their own learning.
