A GASTRO-LINGUISTIC EXPERIENCE IN THE NORTH OF SPAIN.

A Gastrolinguistic Experience is an Erasmus+ course designed for teachers, academic staff and students with at least a B Spanish level.

The course consists on the conceptual fusion of the Spanish gastronomy and its culture keeping the linguistic approach.

Original teaching materials (constantly updated) and carefully chosen culinary activities have been added to this course to optimize it.

PRESENTATION
 
When we talk about Spain we can’t help thinking about the sea and the sun, the gentle character of its people, its fiestas and popular traditions, its territorial contrasts and of course our language and rich gastronomy. For that reason at Syllabus and through Erasmus+, we want to share an experience that  joins the best of our gastronomy and culture with a complete linguistic program for all those interested, either by professional or academic issues, in improving the nuances of their Spanish in Santander, Spain. Our proposal consolidates the improvement of Spanish language and its culture with the discovering and tasting of Spanish cuisine in an authentic, varied and participatory way thanks to a conceptual program in which subjects are related to one another.
 
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
 
This course is dedicated to all the professional foreign Spanish teachers and non teachers in love with Spanish language, its culture and of course cuisine with a B2 level onwards. * Participants not included in the Erasmus+ program will have a 10% discount.*A minimum of 10 students is needed to create this course.
 
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INCLUDE?
 
– 20 hours of Spanish language and culture (Monday-Friday).– Spanish cuisine workshop.– Tapas and pinchos route.– Among the cooker: visit to a restaurant kitchen.– Wine tasting workshop.– City tours with school staff.– Boat ride through Santander’s bay.– Farewell dinner in a typical city restaurant.
 
SCHEDULE
 
The 55 minutes lessons start every Monday at 9.00 and finish at 13.00. Cultural activities will take place in the afternoons outside class time.
 
ACCOMMODATION
 
Tell us if you need accommodation in Santander. We can offer you different possibilities like accommodation in host families on half-board basis as well as in shared apartments.
 
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
 
The students who wish it can register in surf lessons, sailing, horse riding or flamenco.

Learning objectives

OBJECTIVES
 
1. To improve their Spanish linguistic competence in an authentic way developing the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing through a complete linguistic (grammatical contents associated to an B level onwards), cultural and extracurricular program. 2. To show the Spanish foreign teachers new ways (ideas, contents, methodology) of teaching the target language to their students. This methodolical approach based on original ideas and contents, can be adapted to different levels of Spanish. The purpose of this work is to offer the participants a new motivating tool that shows the Spanish language and culture to their own students. 3. Therefore, the students of the course will be aware of the different possibilities of bringing the language to their pupils being able to create their own teaching materials in the future: modifying or extending (customizing) the ones that they already have learnt.  4. To bring first-hand and in different environments the Spanish gastronomy and its peculiarities to the students in a practical, immersive and enjoyable way.

Methodology & assessment

METHODOLOGY

The gastro-linguistic course works as single piece in which all its parts are conected. This original custom-made idea offers the students the chance of discovering the Spanish gastronomy and the language inside it.

We focus on the integration of language learning with culinary experiences. The methodology emphasizes the exploration of gastronomy-related vocabulary, grammar, and linguistic concepts within the context of food and cuisine.

The methodology employed in this gastronomy language learning program is immersive and experiential. It involves a combination of classroom instruction, practical activities, and culinary experiences to facilitate language acquisition and cultural understanding by immersing participants in the rich gastronomic traditions of Spain.

Every day is a brand new chapter seasoned with topics properly interrelated. Mornings, from 9.00 to 13.00, are the time to explore that culinary topics through videos, audios, activities, texts, conversations, games and other surprises such as guest lecturers and experts in the field... this part happens in the classroom. In the afternoons and evenings the lessons are completed with culinary practical activities.

So the gastro-linguistic course takes place at two different stages:

In the classroom: where they will discover new issues and trends of the Spanish gastronomy and its proper jargon/ language through practical and entertaining activities and outside the clasroom, where to put into practice what they have learnt ( learn to prepare traditional and modern Spanish dishes, ordering food, discussing menus, interacting with restaurant staff...).

ASSESSMENT

The students are evaluated on basis of the duration of the course. Assessment will be continuous and the student's development on the basis of the exercises submitted over the entire course will be valued.

All those who wish or need it will be able to make an oral and a written test to determine his/her knowledge of the course.

Certification details

 At the end of each course the students will receive a school certificate of attendance provided that they have completed at least 90% of the required number of hours. This certificate shall detail the name of the course, the number of hours taken and the student's data.
