The rule of law

The activities in this toolkit focus on the topic of the rule of law. Pupils explore the different sides of the rule of law and compare the practical implementation of the law in their own country with others. They do that in two groups, a more theoretical group and a more practical group. For the practical group the topics: the rule of law, breaking the law, going to court, who becomes a criminal, and the rule of law under pressure. For the more theoretical group the topics: How much freedom can citizens have? Who can control the power of the government? How far are the police and the judiciary allowed to go? How many liberties may the state take away from a prisoner? When is a state a constitutional state? Is the rule of law under pressure? The pupils gain a deeper insight and a better understanding of what it means to be a free citizen and having fundamental rights.
