Reading Across Borders

Our aim with this project is to strengthen students’ reading comprehension and communicative skills, norm-critical approach, and multicultural understanding. We start off our project with a modern Swedish writer, Fredrik Backman, and his novel Beartown (2016), along with a novel from a contemporary Italian writer. Both novels will be read in English. With novels and reading as our starting point, we would like to discuss and work with fundamental value issues and cultural understanding. Our aim is also to work interdisciplinary with these novels depending on the specialization the students are studying. Beartown (2016) could be discussed in English, but also other subjects such as Psychology and Law. Another topic of discussion could be the pros and cons of a literary canon. A literary canon is not something that is included in the Swedish curriculum.
