Surviving in space: A STEM activity

Surviving in space is crucial to humankind and is very challenging from the scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematics aspect. In addition, our ecological impact in space should be as little as possible. Surviving in space may be the next step for our civilization from being Earth-based to an interplanetary. The aim of the project “Surviving in space: A STEM activity” is to combine science and technology while keeping their distinct nature. Thus, by familiarizing students with the nature of science, the nature of technology, and the nature of engineering they will be able to understand how their combination works for the improvement of our lives. Searching and formalizing the distinct role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is very important in the advancement of knowledge and their intertwining is essential in solving current and future problems, like surviving in space, and sustainability problems, e.g., climate change, plastic pollution, and recycling. In addition, it is important for students to recognize that scientific discoveries lead to inventions that contribute to the advancement of science and society. Students, by conducting research and analyzing their findings, will develop their collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills through the presentation of their findings in various forms like video, text, 3d-design, podcast and in addition, they will clarify the notions of the nature of science and technology.
