Family participation in creating an environment conducive to literacy and early education is a significant factor in overcoming social exclusion and poverty. This Erasmus+ project piloted family literacy programmes in families and analysed the results for further study.

Bilingual Supportive Material for Migrant Children in Europe (AVIOR)

The Erasmus+ funded AVIOR project aimed to improve the basic numeracy and literacy skills of migrant children and reduce the achievement gap between native and non-native pupils, by using bilingual materials, improving teacher professional competence and enhancing migrant parental involvement. AVIOR ran from December 2016 until August 2019.

KOALA - language competences and cognitive skills in multilingual schools

KOALA (KOordnierte ALphabetisierung im Anfangsunterricht – coordinated literacy in elementary instruction) is an innovative concept of linking literacy and multilingual competences, which has been introduced in primary schools in several German Länder. In Nordrhein-Westfalen the methodology is gradually being expanded and adapted to the changing learner populations in the cities.

KAAP - parents language learning initiative in Antwerp

KAAP is an initiative of De Scholbrug (the 'Schoolbridge'), an NGO based in Antwerp (Belgium-Flanders) which aims to create links between schools, parents and pupils, with a special focus on socially vulnerable families. The KAAP project focuses on providing migrant parents with Dutch language lessons at their children's school.

Breakfast / Morning clubs

In Irish schools, different initiatives to facilitate social inclusion and equality include breakfast clubs, lunch clubs, chess clubs and homework clubs. Schools promote the benefits of providing an early morning breakfast - this includes improved school attendance and retention, improvements in punctuality, interaction with adults, allowing students to have fun whilst at the same time developing social skills, meeting nutritional needs and developing positive links between the school and the family.
