YIMinds: Youth Information minding young people’s mental health

The project aimed to foster dialogue between youth workers, mental health professionals and young people, while addressing mental health stigma.

In collaboration with its members and partners, ERYICA (European Youth Information and Counselling Agency) develops and implements various projects to enhance youth information services and structures. The YIMinds project (Erasmus+, 2022–2024) was created in response to the increasing importance of mental wellbeing, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Project partners recognised the urgent need to support youth and youth information workers in their crucial roles.

‘[I noticed] young people [have] a lot of struggles that are common. If they go unnoticed for a while, this is when the problems start, like school bullying. Even though there have been years of helping methods going into it, it’s still not enough. They need professionals to help them overcome this.’

Evely Pajula, Youth worker in Tallinn, Estonia (from episode 2 of the podcast series)

The project developed various core activities and outcomes:

  • The guide on mental health literacy in youth information work includes guidance, case studies and practical tools to strengthen the role of youth work and information services in promoting mental health. Developed through research and expert consultations, it covers key topics such as effective communication about mental health, crisis management and collaboration with mental health professionals.
  • The podcastseries shares young people’s thoughts on mental health and wellbeing, while featuring testimonials from youth information workers. Designed primarily for youth workers, the series highlights real-life cases and best practices that complement the guide.
  • The Mind Matters Toolbox empowers young people with knowledge and resources to better understand mental health and manage stress. It includes a personality test, myth-busting quiz and informative articles to help young people navigate mental health challenges.
  • ERYICA’s Youth Ambassadors for Youth Information were directly involved in the project, as well as young people from each partner’s countries (Belgium, Austria, Spain, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece).
