In the afternoon, the pupils were able to meet the association ‘Le peuple de la mer’, two members of which, including the founder, explained the various actions carried out by the association.
NGO for the knowledge and protection of cetaceans Leucate | Les PEUPLES de la MER
The association, based in Port-Leucate, is committed to raising awareness among young and old of the actions and impact of man on the marine environment. They are currently helping to monitor the impact of the wind turbines due to be installed off Le Barcarès in 2025.
The association has a boat with which its members carry out observations and record them through participatory science. The actual data is then compiled into a software programme. This approach makes it possible to take stock of the situation before the structures are installed: MISSION POINT ZERO at sea, and then to assess the impact of the wind turbines once they have been installed.
The association also acts as a protector, particularly for the dolphins that are observed offshore. They educate people about biodiversity, including birds, fish and cetaceans.
They have developed a game for younger children to help them familiarise themselves with the marine environment and raise awareness at an early age of the issues surrounding the sea and living things.
We would like to thank the people of the sea for all the information they provided.

We then met Frédéric Larrey, who presented his photos with students from the Bourquin lycée in Argelès-sur-Mer.
They explained the Pelagos project and for each photo the location, the impact of man on the environment, the relationship between man and animal and the biology of the animal observed: jellyfish, dolphins, sperm whales, tuna, the devil of the sea and the sunfish....

It was a very rewarding afternoon of human encounters, scientific knowledge and exchanges about our common good, planet Earth.

We then watched the documentary filmed by Thomas Roger and had an exchange of questions and answers about the film, his job and marine life.
