RESULTS Questionnaires BG - SK together

Summary results questionnaire students’ wellbeing at viio (Belgium)

In general students at viio are quite satisfied with the support they get at home. As you can see the first five questions concerning their home situation were answered in a positive way .The students’ parents really support them if necessary, they are very proud of them. Students feel they can tell what’s on their mind at home and their parents show interest in them, in their school work and help them improve.

Unfortunately the answers to the questions about the wellbeing of students at our school are not that positive. Only 35% of the pupils feels supported by an adult at school. They expect a teacher or a mentor at school to listen to them, compliment them of help them if they have problems. There is definitely room for improvement here.

From the results of the questionnaire we can derive that the relationship between pupils of our school is quite good. 75 up to 80% of the respondents claim they really have a friend at school that makes them feel better, they can share things with, who they can trust and who will comfort them when feeling down. These graphs demonstrate that students at viio mostly have someone they can count on at school.

Contrary to the positive answers on the previous series of questions only half of the respondents feel they have enough input at school. However, students are maybe just not interested in taking part of decision making at school.  Secondly you can derive from these graphs that about 50% of the students, which actually is only half of them as well, know where to go to or who to turn to when they have a problem or need help.

As for dealing with stress and students’ feelings about the future the answers are equally divided. The percentage of students who can handle stress well is about the same as the number who cannot. On the other hand, a slightly larger number is quite optimistic about the future and thinks they will be successful in later life.

To conclude, we have noticed that the answers in general are quite positive, but there is still room for improvement.

For example, our school could provide a place for viio students to talk with each other about their mental health. Maybe they can even ask a professional to support them or to give them advice on how to handle their problems.

Secondly, teachers could also do their bit to improve students’ wellbeing at school. They could show more empathy and learn to listen better to students if they want to talk about certain issues they are struggling with. However, we should keep in mind that teachers aren’t psychologists nor trained to deal with mental problems, but they can always lend a sympathetic ear or offer a shoulder to cry on so to speak.

Last but not least and maybe the easiest request of students to grant: our school could allow students to stay inside during break time. Probably that might be the first adjustment that can be made at school.

Poems and drawing 'My ideal school' (Belgium)

Mistakes do not exist

There are lessons and learning

I learn every day

From doing and trying

I forget myself

And do what I can

I live my lessons

And learn from them

Nicolas

We form friendships

With classmates and colleagues
 We learn from each other
 And conquer our fears

In classes we sit, and listen with care
As lessons unfold, and knowledge we share
The halls are filled with buddies and friends
Laughing, chatting, until the day ends

School, a place of potential
A launching pad for success
 Where young minds are fed
 And their futures are blessed

Teachers guide and inspire
 Helping students to achieve
 Setting goals and reaching higher
So their dreams they can believe

Milan

My ideal school

Is a place where everyone has friends

and no one pretends

Where you can speak your mind

and no one gets declined

My ideal school

Is a place with one golden rule

You do not have to be cool

or pretty or smart to fit in

We all have capacities that are thrillin’

We need to accept differences between people

Not to compare the rich with the poor

The silver with the gold

The teacher with the doctor

But we all need to take care of each other

and love one another

To create a perfect school
