Break down cultural barriers to build intercultural communication

Recent studies have shown that intercultural education helps students understand commonality and difference, question the relative nature of their own cultural identity, and develop multiple perspectives. It is imperative to pay attention to intercultural communication and discuss some specific approaches and strategies that include addressing issues like learning to honour one's own culture and sharing it with the others while developing a capacity to be open to other cultures. Building cultural awareness serves to develop the sense of observation, teach tolerance and break cultural stereotypes. All these aims lay the basis for better knowledge of the culture, but also help deepen the knowledge of pupils' own culture and better appreciation of both, which results in broadening their comprehension of the different ways of behaviour. Intercultural attitudes are those of curiosity and openness, readiness to suspend disbelief about other cultures and belief about one's own.
