Code week alliance 2025 - Hug Bot Coding Game
Hug Bot Coding Game
Objective: Teach kindergarten students the concept of giving simple, step-by-step instructions (like coding) while tying it to the theme of hugs.
Materials Needed:
A large, open space
Printed or drawn "robot" masks (optional for fun)
Floor markers or mats (e.g., hearts, smiley faces, or arrows)
A "Hug Bot" badge or sticker for kids to wear when they’re the robot
Introduction to Coding and Robots:
Explain that a "robot" needs clear instructions to know what to do.
Introduce the idea of coding as giving simple steps (e.g., "Move forward," "Turn right," "Give a hug").
Set Up the Hug Path:
Place markers (e.g., hearts or arrows) on the floor to create a path leading to another child (or a stuffed animal).
The end point is the "Hug Spot," where the "robot" will give a hug.
Pair Students (Coder and Robot):
One child plays the role of the "Coder" and the other is the "Hug Bot."
The Coder gives instructions like:
"Step forward one square."
"Turn left."
"Move to the heart."
"Give a hug."
The Hugging Goal:
When the Hug Bot reaches the Hug Spot, they give a gentle hug to the other child
Switch Roles:
Let students take turns being the Coder and the Hug Bot.
