Description

The target groups are:

  • teachers interested in subject teaching in which all pupils, regardless of their language background, can participate through a focus on (subject specific) language and language development
  • teachers involved in MFL teaching, CLIL activities and/or project-based learning.

This 6 day course is partly based on the results of 2 EU projects that -in collaboration with practitioners - developed and collected good practices empowering teachers to apply subject language scaffolding strategies and related use of technology (digital tools and apps that facilitate interaction).

By involving participants in handson activities individually, in pairs and small groups applying the concepts and principles presented by analyzing and discussing viewed practices, professional  skills are developed related to adapting and designing tasks and scaffolding (digital) materials .

Learning objectives

This course aims to:

  • familiarise teachers with didactic approaches that make use of the home languages (“heritage languages”) of learners
  • promote teacher professionalism in applying inclusive strategies that teachers can use to engage all students in multilingual classes
  • professionalise MFL teachers in adapting and designing technology-enhanced activities and language teaching in specific contexts (CLIL, Virtual Exchange) for the multilingual classroom

Methodology & assessment

The course combines plenary, tutor-led introductions & viewing videos of exemplary classroom procedures with follow-up activities when participants do practical work individually, in pairs and small groups applying the concepts and principles presented by analyzing and discussing viewed practices, and/or practicing approaches involving specific technologies or applications.

At the end of the week delegates will demo, discuss and assess the teaching & learning materials that they created during the hands-on sessions.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Participants will be offered a virtual learning environment (VLE)  to access the course materials, tools and resources which include daily overviews of course activity & task instructions, related task completion templates, polling, reflections and task results sharing tools and lists with (further) reading & viewing materials.

After-course access to the LMS will be made available to promote follow-up communication & collaborative learning when exchanging (re)designed local practice experiences.
