Green evenings

After working on the problems and consequences of plastic for three years, we now set our focus on preparing so called „green evenings“, that are being presented when visting our partner schools in the Netherlands and Sweden. We want to show the consequences of the climate change, share those with others and present opportunities for improvement. The aspect of education is important to have a bigger impact and save our earth together with others – not alone. We work on the topics of sustainable food, mobility and how to have the least impact on the environment. Therefore, we created recipes for vegan, vegetarian and seasonal meals. Most importantly for us is to buy the ingredients regional, from organic farmers and plastic free. We also made sure to eat everything after making it, so we have least food waste as possible. For the topic of mobility, we set up a charging station for electric vehicles on our school grounds. It is running with the energy of our photovoltaic plant, which generates energy from the sun. We also set up a water dispenser so students can fill up their water bottles at school and safe plastic by using reusable bottles instead of plastic. Furthermore, the student representatives of our school organized a “Sustainable Week”, where we worked in small-groups on the topics: “What is sustainability?”, “Sustainable Food”, “Sustainable Fashion”, “Sustainable projects nearby us”, and “How to live sustainable in general”. We presented our results to the rest of the school during breaks, had a taste testing of food, and educated our classmates about sustainability. The Sibylla-Merian-Gymnasium has been in partnership with the Läredaskolan, Hässleholm in Sweden and the Carmelcollege Emmen in the Netherlands since 2018. We hope that we can achieve great results by exchanging our ideas about sustainability.
