Resource hub for integrating nature-based solutions into the curriculum
NBS education integrates nature-based solutions into teaching and learning processes and curriculum development. Through a holistic approach, it connects ecosystems and natural processes with addressing societal challenges in modern societies, emphasising biodiversity preservation, resilience and the services provided by natural systems. The approach places a strong emphasis on local context and community participation in planning and implementation.
The NBS resource hub can be used as a thinking tool, allowing educators to begin at any point in the circle and use questions to explore possibilities and solutions through the online resource and complementary toolkit. The online toolkit operates as a resource repository that enriches the six-step thinking tool.

Using theatre and visual arts to activate STEAM learning
This teaching resource demonstrates how theatre methods and techniques can be integrated into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to enhance learner engagement and understanding. When STEM lessons traditionally focus on concepts, formulas and definitions requiring memorisation, Creative STE(A)M introduces art, particularly theatre techniques and visual arts, as a starting point for teaching and learning. Learners engage through action, imagery and representations developed during STEM lessons, transforming them from passive observers into active participants who gain a deeper conceptual understanding.
Through artistic works and processes, learners can simultaneously develop critical thinking skills, broaden their perspectives and enhance their social and cultural awareness. The resource includes examples, lesson plans and case studies across various themes to support practical implementation in the classroom.

This learning and teaching package introduces the topic of climate disinformation. It provides an understanding of the “media landscape” in which disinformation can emerge. Over the course of four units, pupils look at a spectrum of knowledge and aim to examine areas of possible varieties of legitimate differences of interpretation of data on examples related to climate.

Teaching resource on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
I’m packing my suitcase and have 200 billion euros… offers an interactive simulation game that introduces pupils to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In the activity, pupils take on roles and research investment opportunities that align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The simulation promotes systems thinking and critical reflection on the impact of sustainability-related decisions. It also fosters collaboration and argumentation skills while encouraging a deeper understanding of how the SDGs are interconnected. It includes a presentation about the teaching concept, materials needed and additional resources.

Teaching resource on ecological threats and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Threat of invasive species – an awareness campaign offers a flexible initiative that explores biodiversity and sustainability through the lens of invasive alien species on Madeira.
- The first phase raises awareness of ecological threats, connecting to the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting community engagement.
- The second phase integrates outdoor learning, creative expression and digital tools to support cross-curricular teaching.
- The final phase encourages student-led action and reflection through Service Learning and expert dialogue, embedding active citizenship and environmental responsibility into everyday education.
The resource provides an overview of the teaching concept and a presentation of the campaign and accompanying field trip as well as a panel discussion.

Integrating cross-cutting issues in teacher education provides teacher educators with a framework to foster the competences that teachers need to address five key cross-cutting issues impacting education systems:
- Education on sustainability
- Democratic education and fostering active citizenship
- Diversity and equality in gender and sexual identity
- Multilingualism in teaching and learning
- Digitalisation of learning environments
Each chapter of the syllabus focusses on one of the cross-cutting issues, first defining and then elaborating on emerging key topics that indicate the gaps between societal needs and current practices in schools. Relevant teacher competencies are also described and linked to activity examples.
