Video and animation for creating assignments, applied in STEAM subject teaching

The course will present different types of Apps for creating multimedia materials for STEAM subjects. If you are tired of presentations and want to innovate your teaching materials, one good option is to try short videos. Our hands-on course will give the teachers and educational specialists knowledge and will develop their skills in the multimedia world.

Description

The new digital reality requires teachers to teach and to assess their students through
the language of the multimedia, including video and animation. Just reading books and
working with conventional assessment methods is not enough. Our students and kids are
used to paying attention to multi-media materials, combining photo, video and audio
resources. By its end, they will be confident in designing educational projects using video and
animation technologies and implement it in STEAM lessons. Throughout the course,
participants will get familiar with the innovative methodological approach in the schools/kindergarten, of creating and using multimedia materials in the fields of science,
mathematics and art studies obtained within several workshops led by the method “learning
by doing”. Participants will make planning of STEAM lessons, with implementation of practical
activities like movie making, subtitles adding and animated digital storytelling. The structured
course participants will learn different ICT tools. They will learn practical aspects of shooting
video – basic camera operation, creating a storyboard, hands-on filming exercises, Introduction
to video editing tools and digital storytelling platforms. The participants will learn what

Day 1: Introduction and Icebreakers Morning:

Afternoon:

  • Overview of Video and Animation in STEAM.
  • Introduction to relevant tools and software.

Day 2: Theoretical Foundations Morning:

  • Education system and STEAM in Malta.
  • Digital stories and science comics in teaching.
  • Video and animation in STEAM education.

Afternoon:

  • Workshop on video assessments.
  • Group activity: Creating video assessment descriptions.

Day 3: Practical Aspects of Multimedia Morning:

  • Tips for photography and cinematography.
  • Basics of camera operation, storyboarding.

Afternoon:

  • Introduction to video editing tools.
  • Hands-on video editing using Canva and OpenShot.
  • Sharing videos on various platforms.

Day 4: Techniques for Video and Digital Materials Morning:

  • Outdoor activity: Video shooting exercises.

Day 5: Integrating Multimedia into Lessons Morning:

  • Outdoor activity: Collecting materials for video assignment.

Day 6: Collaborative Project Work Morning:

  • Group work on lesson plans and animations.

Methodology & assessment

The course is designed as an interactive process. The format of the course is didactic,
experiential, and interactive along with discussions, individual and team exercises. The focus is on experiential learning and workshop approaches, lectures and group discussions. Presenting up-to-date knowledge, concepts, methodologies and examples from different countries.The participants will learn how to develop lessons and assessments implementing video and animations. They will work on individual and team tasks to create assessments and lesson plans. For the structured course, the participants will work on Google classroom, to have access to educational materials and to upload the results from all tasks. Sharing: Participants share experiences and expertise on the topic and learn from one another. Collaborative workshops: Working in groups on a learing scenario, lesson plan, formative assessment and creating learning resources to be used in their own school.
