Unlock language skills with content-based teaching

The principles of communicative language teaching and the needs of modern curricula show that language learning works best when tasks are meaningful, set in real-world contexts, and connected to different subjects, not just language classes.

Description

In the same way, including ICT-literacy and other 21st-century skills as part of all subjects underscores the importance of using language to communicate effectively in every classroom today.

In this context, language teachers are faced with the challenge of (a) designing language lessons around real-life topics, (b) incorporating teamwork, problem-solving and inquiry-based tasks in content-based teaching proposals, and (c) letting learning transcend the classrooms doors. The course aims at helping present and future eTwinner teachers come to grips with this demand by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to start implementing (or improve already existing) content-based proposals in their classrooms.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles underlying the teaching approaches that foster the learning of a foreign language through projects and proposals that foster content knowledge building.
  • Analyse and assess the ins and outs of planning problem-solving and inquiry-based tasks in the context of content-based eTwinning projects.
  • Explore how to exploit ICT tools, AI inclusive, as resources to foster cooperation and the integration of contents in the language classrooms.
  • Gain inspiration and ideas to create and assess a content-based lesson.

Methodology & assessment

The course is offered as an asynchronous course with flexibility in regard to when and where participants follow the course content and join the course activities. However, there is a final deadline in place for the submission of a course product. Participants are required to actively contribute to the course activities by sharing their work and submitting a course product. This product is submitted and assessed by peers or the course instructor in the final module of the course.

Certification details

Upon successful completion of the course, a digital course certificate is awarded. The certificate shows the name of the learner and key course details such as the estimated learning hours, the learning objectives, and a link to the course homepage.
