Description

Understanding the European Union: Institutions, Values and EU Decision-Making for Educators is a structured training course designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge of the EU and their capacity to teach European citizenship in a critical and inclusive way. The course explores the historical development of European integration, core EU values, institutional structures, and decision-making processes, while emphasising their relevance for everyday school life. Participants examine how EU policies influence education, youth opportunities, and democratic participation, and how these themes can be addressed across subjects. The course aligns strongly with the priorities of Erasmus+ by promoting democratic values, active citizenship, inclusion, and European cooperation in education. There is also an organised tour to discover the cultural significance and natural beauties of Barcelona and network with colleagues.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the historical origins and evolution of the European Union
  • Identify core EU values, principles, and their relevance for education

  • Analyse the impact of EU policies on schools, teachers, and students
  • Strengthen EU citizenship education and democratic culture in schools

  • Promote student participation, dialogue, and democratic engagement
  • Integrate European priorities such as inclusion, sustainability, and participation into teaching practice

Methodology & assessment

The course is based on participatory, learner-centred, and experiential methodologies aligned with adult education and democratic education principles. Methods include interactive lectures, guided discussions, case studies, simulations of EU decision-making, collaborative workshops, and reflective activities. Emphasis is placed on linking theory with classroom practice and participants’ professional contexts.

Assessment is formative and reflective, focusing on active participation, collaborative tasks, and practical outputs such as lesson plans, project ideas, or school action strategies. Peer feedback, self-assessment, and facilitated reflection are integral components. Learning outcomes are evaluated through participants’ ability to apply EU knowledge pedagogically and critically, rather than through formal testing.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Course materials include structured presentations, policy summaries, case studies, and pedagogical templates.
