Description

Building Inclusive Classrooms is designed for teachers seeking new approaches to engaging all learners and fostering inclusivity in their classrooms. Theories of ‘Social and Emotional Learning’ and ‘Universal Design Learning’ offer exciting new ways to tackle the challenge of engaging diverse learners. This course explores how teachers can adapt these approaches to create collaborative, creative and inclusive classrooms. In particular, participants will explore the latest language-teaching methodologies, observe these techniques and strategies at work in our language lessons, analyse their own teaching practices, and develop materials, tools, and techniques they can implement directly in their own teaching. Through workshops, group tasks, and knowledge-sharing activities, we look at how these tools can help create lessons for a diverse range of learners.

Learning objectives

  • Learn practical approaches to creating inclusive classrooms.
  • Share experiences with other teachers on successes and challenges.
  • Reflect on strategies for learner engagement.
  • Create and gather materials to fit your classroom
  • Reflect on current teaching practices and identify gaps
  • Build a portfolio of different fresh resources
  • Refresh and upskill your teaching practice, while sharing experiences with fellow teachers
  • Gain confidence using English by participating in international group classes
  • Build intercultural awareness by enjoying cultural and heritage trips

Methodology & assessment

The course runs over 6 days consisting of 25 learning hours featuring tuition, cultural workshops, a guided historical walking tour of Galway City and a one-day cultural tour. The teaching approach is communicative and interactive with participants working to complete project tasks, including a portfolio of lesson resources and materials. Participants receive feedback on their work from the course trainers and also benefit from peer input when sharing with the group.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Trainers use a blend of textual and digital resources, taking full advantage of the smart board technology in use in all Atlantic Centre of Education classrooms. Visual aids, including video, film, photography, and audio recordings blend with traditional textual materials drawn from textbooks, journalism, blog posts etc. Many courses utilise ed-tech tools which participants can adapt to enhance their teaching practices.
