Description

  • This course takes place July 1st to July 19th and is three weeks long. It is however possible to join only for the first two weeks, if necessary. If You want to join for only the two first weeks, please contact us at summeruni@jyu.fi before enrolment.

  • With versatile learning methods and expert teachers, the course offers an immersive learning experience in language and culture. The focus of the intensive course is close interaction between instructors and students, allowing the Finnish language to be used and developed as extensively as possible. The course is taught in level groups from beginners to advanced learners (A0-B2) on weekdays from 9 am to 2 pm at the premises of the University of Jyväskylä.

  • Our intensive course differs from other Finnish language courses in both its intensity (5 lessons per day) and the extensive cultural program offered outside of lessons. On the course you familiarize yourself with Finnish culture and practice the Finnish language in the evenings and weekends. The guided cultural program includes e.g. trips to nature, visits to cultural sites in the area, sauna evenings and getting to know Finnish food culture. By taking part in the cultural program you’ll get more familiar with the Finnish culture and customs and get a chance to explore the beautiful Jyväskylä. The activities are led by native Finns, giving you a chance to practice your newly learned Finnish skills outside of the classroom, too!

  • The teaching language on the course is Finnish. Please notice that English is used as a supporting language for teaching. Therefore a sufficient level of understanding basic English is required for joining the course.

Methodology & assessment

We believe in immersion - the most effective way to learn a language is to use it! Therefore we organize voluntary cultural program in addition to traditional classroom lessons on our intensive courses. On our courses you won't only learn the language, you will also experience Central Finland and get know Finnish culture.

The teaching methods are versatile taking every student into account. There may be small tests during the course and students may be asked to give a small presentation in Finnish. There is no final exam at the end of the course, but you will get an evaluation from your teacher of how your language skills have developed.
The language of instruction is Finnish, but English may be used as an auxiliary language if required, especially on beginner and intermediate levels.

You will be provided a textbook (included in course fee) chosen by the teacher in the beginning of the course. In addition to the textbook, the teaching materials may include authentic texts, music and videos. The contents are genuinely useful also in the later stages of your studies.
