Benefits of school-based study groups

School-based study groups where teachers participate in online courses can facilitate teacher-centred collaboration at school level. These groups offer effective peer support mechanisms for all teachers, regardless of experience. They also provide an opportunity for colleagues to come together, share their knowledge and experiences, and learn from one another. The group setting can also help to motivate participants and hold them accountable for their own learning.

European pilot 2019–2022

This concept was developed and tested in a pilot project that involved a group of teachers from across Europe from 2019 to 2022. The pilot was organised in the context of the School Education Gateway and eTwinning professional development activities, which are now offered via the European School Education Platform.

Initially, these teachers tested the study groups and developed resources to help set them up. Later, more complex scenarios were implemented where study groups were offered at local or regional level, for example involving colleagues from neighbouring schools. In the final year of the pilot, a special focus was placed on the role of study groups in the work of eTwinning schools. This is because the schools need to regularly provide evidence that they are developing collaborative practices and facilitating professional development for teachers.

From 2023 onwards, the concept of school-based study groups will be shared as an example of a good practice to be used by eTwinning schools. Teachers involved in the pilot project will share their knowledge and experiences in webinars and workshops to support aspiring or current eTwinning schools.
