THE SCHOOL

Our organisation is a young secondary school called Colegio Narval, which opened its doors in 1997. It is located in the south of Spain, in Santa Ana (Cartagena) in the region of Murcia. Regarding basic primary education, there are 625 students registered in our school, they are grouped in 24 classrooms. Regarding basic secondary education, our school has 467 students, from 12 to 16 years old. The students are grouped in 16 classrooms with a varied offer including a bilingual lesson in different subjects for each group, educational reinforcement groups and curricular diversification.

Currently, in most of the classrooms of primary and secondary education, the students use iPads as their main tool to learn the different subjects. This initiative started in the school year 2016 as a way of innovating our teaching methods and offering our students a wider range of educational opportunities. Our school also offers our students educational psychologist guidance and we are a Cambridge exam centre where everyone including our students can take their English exams. This year we have introduced the Sixth Form education so that our students can complete their education in the centre. The aim of our school has always been improving our students’ education, helping them to broaden their minds and making them think that their visionary future could come true one day.

OUR CITY

We come from Cartagena, a coastal town which is located in the south east of Spain. Cartagena is a well-known tri-millenary historic city, and its interest lies in the artistic heritage as well as in the harbour it has. The historic importance of this town is due to its strategic location by the Mediterranean Sea, that’s why it was chosen as the capital of the Carthaginian Civilisation. It also had a great importance during the Roman Period, and as a result of that time of splendour, today some ruins of the Carthaginian and Roman ages can be visited in our town, such as the impressive Roman Theatre and the remains of the ancient Punic Wall, among others. Additionally, a Festival of Carthaginians and Romans is held in town during the second half of September to relive the events of the Second Punic War over 2,200 years ago. A colourful spectacle where otherwise peaceful citizens of Cartagena are dressed up in historical costumes to re-enact the fierce battle.

Finally, it is worth to mention that the first military submarine ever was built in our town, since the engineer and sailor Isaac Peral was from Cartagena. As a consequence of this and also of its privileged location, Cartagena has a huge naval tradition.
