Christmas Carols in Poland
Christmas Carols in Poland
Christmas Carols in Poland tell us a lot about Jesus Christ, the Three Kings, the Shepherds, Angels. The oldest Polish carol comes from the 15th century. Christmas carols are sung from Christmas till 2nd February - the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The most popular carols sung in Poland are: "Cicha noc", "Lulajże Jezuniu", "W żłobie leży", "Bóg się rodzi", "Jezus Malusieńki". There is still a tradition in Poland - so called "Christmas Caroling" that groups of people visit various houses singing carols - they have different costumes (there is a devil, an angel, a shepherd) and wish the people health and happiness.
Pupils from Konstancin-Jeziorna, Poland, recorded a Polish Christmas Carol that comes from the 17th century - there are words in Polish together with English translation below

"Przybieżeli do Betlejem"
Przybieżeli do Betlejem pasterze
Grając skocznie Dzieciąteczku na lirze
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Oddawali swe ukłony w pokorze
Tobie z serca ochotnego, o Boże!
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Anioł Pański sam ogłosił te dziwy
Których oni nie słyszeli, jak żywi
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Chwała na wysokości, chwała na wysokości, a pokój na ziemi
Came to Bethlehem
Shepherds came to Bethlehem,
had playing on the lyre for baby.
Glory in the highest, glory in the highest,
and peace on the Earth.
They bowed humbly.
For you with a willing heart, O God!
Glory in the highest...
The angel of the Lord himself proclaimed these wonders,
which they didn't heard like alive men.
Glory in the highest...
