Students from the 4th General Lyceum of Rhodes bring life back to fire-scarred land (2025–26)
On Tuesday, February 3, students from the 4th General High School of Rhodes took part in a tree-planting initiative on the slopes of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Ypseni, planting 60 cypress trees in an area that has been repeatedly
by wildfires, most recently the major fire of 2023. Students from classes A4 and A6 participated in the initiative, as well as students who had presented paintings at the exhibition “300 Students Paint the Environment They Dream Of,” as part of the Tourism in Climate Crisis Forum. The students were accompanied by teachers Anastasia Anastasiadi, Theocharo Matzavinou, and Kalliopi Filippaki. The initiative was implemented as part of the school’s Erasmus+ Accreditation Project, with the aim of fostering environmental awareness, active citizenship, cooperation, and responsibility toward the natural environment. The tree-planting took place in collaboration with the social cooperative “For Nature” / Common Nature, with the organization’s director, Mr. Nektarios Kalogirou, informing the students about the conditions for reforestation and the naturalre generation of forests. The presence of teenage students in a place striving to be reborn sends a message of hope: the future of the environment can and must be based on the knowledge, participation, and action of the younger generation.
