Mission 2: Mehmetcik Primary School by Burak Can Karadağ
Our students are currently designing their ‘Empathy Earth’ artworks as a core part of our collaborative collage activity. One of our students creatively illustrated a split-view Earth: one half represents a pristine, thriving nature, while the other reflects the impact of environmental harm. This visual contrast allowed her to explore the planet's 'emotions' and express a duality of feelings—both happiness and sadness—regarding the environment. The activity effectively bridges emotional expression with the acquisition of specific environmental vocabulary.
Our students’ completed artworks vividly demonstrate their grasp of foundational English sentence patterns. By illustrating the Earth divided into two contrasting spheres (one lush and green, the other polluted and brown) the student successfully applied the structure 'It is clean / It is dirty' to describe environmental conditions. This task highlights the effective integration of visual arts and language acquisition, showing a clear understanding of basic adjectives in a meaningful context.
Our 'Empathy Earth' drawings are undergoing an exciting digital transformation! After our students created their beautiful physical drawings, we took the learning experience further by introducing them to AI-powered digitalisation tools. We showed students how to take their hand-drawn art and transform it into polished, vibrant digital illustrations, like the dual-view Earth shown here.
This innovative step not only preserved the core emotional message of their original work but also equipped them with essential digital literacy skills for the 21st century. We will soon be merging all these digitized drawings into a cohesive, collaborative e-book. This book will not only showcase their art and language skills but will stand as a digital testament to their shared commitment to a protected and expressing their emotions through environment.
In this session, I am guiding my student through the innovative process of transforming her hand-drawn 'Empathy Earth' sketch into a professional digital artwork using AI-powered tools. By integrating technology into our creative workflow, we are not only enhancing our project's visual output but also equipping students with essential digital literacy and AI competence. It’s inspiring to see how a simple drawing evolves into a high-quality digital illustration through this collaborative teacher-student interaction.
