Autonomous Robotic System for Exploration, Detection, Data Transmission, and Mapping

Autonomous Robotic System for Exploration, Detection, Data Transmission, and Mapping Modular Improvement Project Description / Abstract This eTwinning project focuses on the improvement and modular development of an already functional autonomous robotic system. The robot has been fully constructed and is capable of exploring an unknown environment, detecting obstacles, transmitting data, and mapping the area in real time. It operates in a square-pattern path, recording every movement and environmental detail, and returns to its base station using stored data. Participants from different countries will collaborate to upgrade the robot’s performance through specific modules that enhance scanning accuracy, timing, and communication. The project promotes teamwork, creativity, and STEM learning by combining both technical experimentation and cross-age collaboration. Objectives · Enhance the capabilities of an existing autonomous robot. · Learn and apply programming using Arduino and NodeMCU microcontrollers. · Improve scanning accuracy, synchronization, and data communication. · Encourage teamwork between younger and adult learners. · Strengthen problem-solving, analytical, and digital collaboration skills. Technical and Cognitive Skills Deepening knowledge of robotics, automation, and programming. Hands-on experience with Arduino and NodeMCU, sensors, and data management. Understanding modular design and improving existing systems. Developing problem-solving, analytical, and experimental skills. Modules and Development Stages The project’s work plan focuses entirely on improving the robot through three modular paths: Module 1: Code Optimization · Optimize the existing Arduino Uno code. · Improve timing between movement and scanning routines. · No additional hardware required. Module 2: Dual-Arduino Architecture · Add a second Arduino Uno. · Use serial communication between the two boards. · Assign tasks: o Primary Arduino: Movement and navigation. o Secondary Arduino: Scanning and sensor data handling. Module 3: Interrupt-Based Scanning · Implement interrupts on the secondary Arduino. · Enable asynchronous and real-time object scanning. · Provide enhanced responsiveness and performance. Collaboration and Learning Process Teams from different schools will collaborate through TwinSpace, sharing progress, testing results, and documentation (photos, code snippets, and short videos). Joint virtual meetings will support discussion and reflection on improvements, allowing both younger students and adults to exchange experience and creativity. Expected Results · Upgraded, fully functional autonomous robot prototype. · Improved coding efficiency, scanning performance, and system responsiveness. · Shared documentation of development and testing stages. · Strengthened digital, communication, and STEM-related skills. · A practical example of real-world innovation through collaboration.
