Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and DBL (Design-Based Learning), two dynamic, student-centered approaches that promote active learning across disciplines. CLIL integrates language learning with subject content, enabling students to acquire both simultaneously in meaningful contexts. DBL emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking by engaging learners in solving real-world problems through design processes. Participants will learn to plan, implement, and assess CLIL and DBL lessons that foster deeper understanding, multilingual competence, and 21st-century skills. Through practical examples, interactive tasks, and reflective activities, educators will develop the tools to create inclusive, engaging, and interdisciplinary learning experiences suitable for diverse classrooms.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core concepts of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and DBL (Design-Based Learning).
  • Recognize the benefits of integrating language and subject learning through real-world tasks.
  • Plan lessons that combine language development with subject content using CLIL principles.
  • Apply DBL strategies to foster creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
  • Design interdisciplinary activities that engage students in meaningful, hands-on learning.
  • Develop basic assessment tools suited to CLIL and DBL approaches.
  • Reflect on teaching practices and adapt them for more student-centered, skill-oriented learning.

Methodology & assessment

This course uses a mix of interactive lectures, multimedia resources, collaborative activities, and practical tasks to support active learning. Participants will engage in lesson design, peer discussions, and reflection exercises to deepen their understanding of CLIL and DBL. Real classroom scenarios and case studies will be used to connect theory to practice. Learning will be assessed through self-assessment tasks, peer feedback, and the submission of a final lesson plan or activity that applies CLIL and/or DBL principles. Participation in discussions and completion of activities will also contribute to the overall assessment.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Participants will have access to a variety of digital and print resources, including articles, video tutorials, sample lesson plans, and case studies. Online collaboration tools such as Padlet, Jamboard, or Google Docs will be used for group work and brainstorming. Templates for lesson planning and assessment will be provided to support practical application. Learning will take place through a user-friendly online platform, where all materials, discussion forums, and tasks are organized.
